From the recording Her Obit
Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Ninety-nine point nine years on this earth, just one more day to go,
But before she could reach one hundred, the good Lord called her home.
Church pews were overflowing, though the rain fell hard that day,
And her obit paid a wonderful tribute to our gracious sweet Miss May.
[Chorus 1]
It painted a portrait of the amazing things she’d done,
Rhodes scholar back at Georgia, gold medal in 51.
A decorated teacher, earned a Purple Heart in ‘Nam.
Ran the county’s first women’s shelter, a deacon, a wife, a mom,
It was a story ‘bout a woman with guts and grace and grit,
It read like a Hollywood movie script,
It described a life so well lived
And I’ve never read anything quite like it…her obit.
[Verse 2]
They say she never met a stranger, always kept an open door,
Cooked enough for half the county, fed the hungry and the poor.
She’d pray for every soldier till they made it safely home,
And she’d have their families come for supper, so they knew they weren’t alone.
[Pre Chorus 1]
The local obit filled a whole page — every corner, every line,
But even that wasn’t near enough to share the life she left behind.
[Chorus 2]
It painted a portrait of the amazing things she’d done,
Rhodes scholar back at Georgia, gold medal in 51.
A decorated teacher, earned a Purple Heart in ‘Nam.
Ran the county’s first women’s shelter, a deacon, a wife, a mom,
It was a story ‘bout a woman with guts and grace and grit,
It read like a Hollywood movie script,
It described a life so well lived
And I’ve never read anything quite like it…her obit.
[GUITAR SOLO]
[Bridge]
Guess I really never thought much ‘bout my legacy,
Till I sat there in that church reading her obituary.
Made me realize there are some things I need to change,
So that they can at least say my life was well lived, someday.
[Outro]
A story like hers is seldom heard,
I’m just glad I knew her while she walked this earth.
It was a story ‘bout a woman with guts and grace and grit,
It read like a Hollywood movie script,
It described a life so well lived … her obit.
